Description |
West Family Shakers seated on the west side steps of the West Family Dwelling, probably late 1880s. The single brother is Dr. Francis M. Pennebaker (1837-1902), a dentist who came to Pleasant Hill as a boy in 1849. Seated on chair at left is Sarah Pennebaker (1839-1916); at right is Mary McGaughey, with pet cat. On top step at left is Mary Pettus, who arrived at Pleasant Hill in May 1883. Lula Harris (b. 1868, arrived 1882) is seated in the middle at right, and below her is Cynthia Shain (1827-1906). Cynthia Shain, one of the second generation of Shains, was brought to the village in 1843 by her uncle John Shain, and also a relation of the Pennebaker Shakers. Inscription on paper pasted to back: "Dr. Frank Pennebaker (in door), Sr. Sarah at his right in Chair, four other Shakers." On tape on back bottom, "Letcher Mathews Southerland." On photo in ink, "Sister Sarah Pennebaker." Stamped on front left board, "J.L.S." |
